In a secluded part of Oriental Mindoro, nestled within the lush, rugged landscape, lies the Mangyan community of Bayang Lisap. For years, this community faced a reality unimaginable to many—living entirely without access to electricity. The lack of lighting not only dimmed their homes but also curtailed opportunities for education, safety, and economic growth.

On November 27, 2024, in collaboration with Pampamayanang Mangyan Ugnayan Inc. (PMUI) and RS Marasigan Enterprise (RSM), EDOTCO Philippines brought light and hope to this community through its impactful Tower2Power program. This initiative underscores EDOTCO’s unwavering belief that connectivity goes beyond towers and networks—it is a bridge to a better, more sustainable future for underserved communities.

Bridging Gaps in Education and Opportunity

Electricity is more than just a utility; it is an enabler of progress. For the Mangyan community of Bayang Lisap, the absence of lighting compounded existing challenges, especially in education as students who were eager to learn were unable to study after dark. According to the tribal leader, this lack of electricity has placed the community at a disadvantage compared to other Mangyan groups in Mindoro, widening the educational divide.

In response, EDOTCO and its partners implemented life-changing solutions. Solar lights were installed in 55 homes, bringing an immediate transformation. Not only can the children now study in the evenings, but parents can also perform household tasks more efficiently and families can gather and bond in the comfort of their illuminated homes.

This single addition has done more than light up a pathway—it has become a symbol of safety, unity, and opportunity. The streetlight has enabled community events, evening gatherings, and shared celebrations that were once inconceivable, fostering a stronger sense of togetherness.

With the installation of solar lighting, residents can now extend their working hours, allowing them to produce more brooms and significantly increase their earnings. This newfound economic empowerment enhances their ability to support their families and invest in their future.

The improved lighting also enhances community safety. Families can move about freely after dark, unburdened by the dangers that previously came with the night. This increased sense of security has made Bayang Lisap not only brighter but also more resilient.

Building a Healthier, More Informed Community

The Tower2Power initiative didn’t stop at infrastructure. Recognising the importance of health and hygiene in fostering sustainable development, EDOTCO hosted an educational session tailored to the community's needs. Delivered in the Mangyan ethnic language by a local educator, the session ensured that vital health information was accessible and culturally relevant.

To further support this effort, EDOTCO distributed 120 hygiene kits to students, equipping them with tools to maintain better personal hygiene and health practices. This approach reinforces the idea that progress begins with informed and empowered individuals.

A Celebration of Unity and Hope

The day’s activities culminated in a heartfelt Share-a-Meal event, bringing together approximately 300 community members. This gathering symbolised the spirit of unity and collaboration that defines the Tower2Power initiative. It was a celebration of the progress made and a reminder of the brighter future that lies ahead.

The success of the Tower2Power initiative in Bayang Lisap would not have been possible without collaboration. PMUI, a dedicated non-governmental organisation, brought its deep understanding of Mangyan communities, while RSM, EDOTCO’s trusted site construction provider in Mindoro, lent its technical expertise to make the vision a reality. By combining resources, expertise, and shared purpose, EDOTCO and its partners have created a sustainable solution that empowers the community not just for today, but for generations to come.

The Tower2Power program in Bayang Lisap is more than an initiative—it is a commitment to creating a world where no community is left behind. It demonstrates EDOTCO’s belief that connectivity is a transformative force, capable of driving progress, fostering resilience, and bridging opportunity gaps.
